Al-shabaab via their media wing Al-kataaib (the brigades) have released almost an hour long video entitled “AMISOM and the inevitable End part 2”. In it the Group reveals how much work and planning went into the boldest bomb attack on the AMISOMs main Base in Halane, claiming the life of the Burundian deputy force commander then Maj. Gen. Juvenal Niyonguruza, and scores AMISOM soldiers.
For security analysts it shouldn’t come as a surprise, since Harakat Al-shabaab Al-mujahideen proved time and again they are able to target top AMISOM and TFG officials at will, and assassination of the Interior Minister recently serves as a reminder that it’s not a question of when. but rather where.
The professionally produced video, starts typically with verse from the Holy Quran: “And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, “Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?” (4:75)
“Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah , and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of Taghut. So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak.”(4:76)
The first verse in reality is a message directed to the Muslim youths Somalis and none Somalis alike, admonishing them whilst at the same time reminding them of the plight civilians in Mogadishu especially, who live continually in fear for their lives. Whereas the second verse relates al-shabaabs cause, labelling their enemies as allies of Satan. The voice of the recitation belongs to none other than Shaykh Omar abdelrahman who is currently imprisoned in the US.
Shabaab reconnaissance
The 54 minute long video presents three separate operations, with first being the bomb attack against African union’s main base in Halane, but what’s should be shocking for AMISOM and the TFG, is the extent of shabaabs infiltration and access to sensitive sites as demonstrated in the video, which in the long term will prove the downfall of this ill conceived mission.
According to the narrator, preparations for the mission commenced when the group heard of an imminent meeting at the base which includes top TFG, AMISOM officials and Mercenaries AKA Private Military Companies (PMCs) namely Dynocorp.
An undercover shabaab member gained access to the main base, with a simple camera inconspicuously concealed in what seems to be a shoulder bag.
The operative as he walks into the base is the unmistakable sight of four flags fluttering in the wind namely; Burundi, Uganda, Somalia and what seems to be the African Union.
Once inside the base remarkably, the soldiers are not even bothered in the slightest of his presence, with all their attention on a westerner visiting perhaps for the first time.
At one point the undercover shabaab operative is talking to Major “Abdul rojamaya”, identified as AMISOMs head of intelligence in the video, a possible hint that the shabaab spy is a double agent, a tactic modified and later used by Al-Qaeda central (AQC) to a devastating effect in that same year, when triple agent Humaam khalil abu mulal Al-balawi AKA abu Dujanah Al- Khurasaani,who detonated an explosive vest in Afghanistan, resulting in the death of 7 C.I.A operatives and 1 Jordanian intelligence officer.
The attack was cited by al-shabaab as a revenge for the assassination of senior commander Salih ‘Ali Saleh Al-nabhani high on the FBI most wanted list.
Al-kataaib media also seem to have got hold of pictures of previous meetings between Mercenaries AKA PMCs and AMISOM top officials further evidence this was a well prepared operation.
Al-shabaab operatives a probably unknown to their targets are still active and have access to government officials as well as AMISOM bases, and the reason for that is clear in the video, due the fact great effort was taken to pixel out certain subjects in the video so as to not expose the operative, and also length of time between when the video was taken and released might not arouse suspicion.

if we get a little philosophical about this; war,death and destruction and now famine to blame it on al-shabaab even after wikileaks, is a lazy way of thinking that got western power into a seemingly perpetual war on “TERROR”.if you care to remember the ICU was a precursor to Al shabaab, an in hindsight much more acceptable to the west than the current.
